Abstract
Background: One of the high maternal mortality rate in Indonesia is due to relatively low coverage of aid by health professionals. The Department of Health set a target of 90 percent of births are attended by medical staff in 2010. Comparison with the results of the survey IDHS that births attended by professional medical personnel increased from 66 percent to 73 percent 2002-2003 IDHS IDHS in 2007. Objective: To determine the effect of counseling by midwives to pregnant women decision in choosing the helper and the delivery at the Puskesmas Abeli. Method: An experimental study with pre-designed experimental design. The sample in this study is the third trimester pregnant women sample selection by simple random sampling. The sample size was calculated using statistical software program sample calculation power and sample size analysis (PASS) with a sample of 50 pregnant women. Collecting data using questionnaires, data analysis includes univariable and bivariate. Results: Respondents who did not select the health professionals for counseling after the birth attendants were 5 people (10%) and there are 7 people (14%) mothers who have not selected health facilities for delivery place. Bivariate analysis showed that counseling by midwives influence decisions of pregnant women in choosing a birth attendant. Analysis results obtained using the Mc Nemar test the value of x ^ 2 = 8 with p-value (0.0078) indicating no significant difference between the plan before giving birth attendants counseling with counseling after the birth attendants plan.
